[KATAS OFW] Pinoy Couple in Saudi Builds 3BR 1T/B Dream House in Batangas

One of the goals of many Filipinos working abroad is to find a well-paying job and to help a loved one find work there, too. In some cases, the OFW brings their spouse or children abroad to work there if not to settle with them, but most of the time, it’s the former.

Such is the case of the OFW couple that we will feature in this post. The couple, Mr. and Mrs. Gutierrez, have been working in Saudi Arabia for several years now. And one of their goals for their family is to have a house they can call their own back home.

In their case, both had to work abroad. Mr. Gutierrez works as a porter in a government hospital for five years now, and his wife, a hospital nurse for eight years now. They have three children they support back home. And so, they were only able to start the construction of their dream house in March 2020 – around the time the coronavirus was starting to reach pandemic levels.

Despite the situation, the couple decided to push through with their house project. Though challenging as it was, their decision created jobs for some people in their hometown, mainly laborers and their construction team.

As with every project, the construction work starts with a floor plan. The house was designed with an 81sqm floor plan. The result will be a 3-bedroom, 1 toilet and bath bungalow.

The construction work was an upgrade of the old house that they have, with additional modifications and expansion work. They started with the installation of beams, roofs, and steel trusses.

Among the major renovations they did was the expansion of their living room area connecting to the kitchen and the dining area. They also added one more room by connecting an old nearby house to their own. This has significantly increased the living space of their house, as you can see in the photos.

After they have connected the two houses, they then proceeded with the tiling of the floors. The house took on a more modern look after the ceiling and floors have been completed. The next step was installing the doors. They changed all of the doors in the house, and here is the breakdown of the local costs, labor not yet included.

The house hasn’t been fully completed in terms of interior design but the couple’s family in Batangas have already been using the living space to this day.

The renovation work up until this point has cost them Php 1.07 million ($21,400). And despite the couple not being able to oversee the project personally, Mr. Gutierrez’s brother was the one who took charge in monitoring the developments of the work and ensured that the work is progressing as it should, dealing with issues and problems that come along the way, as well.
